Words, words, and more words

Hannah is becoming quite a conversationalist. I can no longer count how many words she says, but some of the newer ones are sky, tree, shoe, sock, spaghetti-o (uh-oh pa-get-te-ooooo), agua (for water), Mattie, and bless you. She's putting more and more words together and is very good at telling the dogs no (Pablo, no! Mattie, no! Guster, no!) She is not very good at explaining herself when she's upset and prefers to throw herself over backward while screaming.

Dad and I took Hannah to the park at Southpark Meadows today (sorry, no pics this time) and she was hilarious. She's really improved at climbing, but she's a shorty. She probably could climb the ladders if she were just an inch or so taller. The steps are all a little too big for her. But the slides are very manageable. And she loves to slide (wheeeeeeee!)

This evening right before bed time Hannah heard her Papi outside thru the open window. He was speaking to our neighbor and the were using Spanish. She became very excited and ran to the door yelling. Once we got outside and she saw who was there she calmed down a lot and had no interest in them. I'm pretty sure she thought her Abuela Keta was here. She knows Papi speaks Spanish to Abuela but hasn't quite figured out that he can speak it to other people too. Still, it was pretty cool to see that she is aware of the two different languages. We've noticed that her baby talk is different when she is "talking" in Spanish than English, which is also very cool. I'm not counting on her being fluent in two languages since she hears English so, so much more, but I hope we at least provide her with enough of a familiarity that she can pick it up easily later on if she chooses.

15 month doctor visit

Hannah had her 15 month check up today. It was rescheduled several times because of all our recent illness. She weighs 19lb 13oz (10%), is 30in long (25-50%), and her head is 18 1/2in (75%). She showed no signs of her previous sicknesses and her diaper rash was all gone. And she is meeting all the milestones like she should. Can't get much better than that!

So here's a little run down. Hannah says something like 20 words. The most recent are tee taw (see saw) and yes. She also makes several animal sounds and a few signs. She is climbing these days and is getting a little sneaky with it. For example, she will move the stool in the kitchen and climb on it to reach something on the counter. She is starting to find her body parts. She's known how to find our noses for a while, but now she has figured out that she has one too. Of course, she misses a lot and hits her eye or sticks her finger up her nose. She also has known how to find our belly buttons for a while, but now she knows where hers is and thinks it's hilarious.

For months now Hannah has loved music and she has liked to dance. Now she is starting to ask for music, and even for specific songs. She loves "Ride Cowgirl" (where she bounces on my knees while I sing a song about a cowgirl and at the end she falls off the "horse") and Ring Around the Rosies.

Hannah loves books. She has lots of toys but spends most of her time flipping thru her books. Sometimes she brings them to me, thrusts them in my lap, and stretches her arm up to me, which is her sign to read to her. But most of the time she "reads" to herself. She talks to herself as she stares at the pages. When she turns them she stops and then starts again, so we think she's reading, right?

She's also a big fan of closing doors. No idea what's up with that, but if there is an open door in sight she will try to close it. Same for anything that looks wrong to her - a carpet corner turned up, a bowl or a cup not where she left it. She's a little anal about some things.

I could go on, of course, for quite a bit longer, but I won't. I've bragged about my girl enough for one day!

Meadow and Emily came over this evening to see us. Hannah was so delighted to see them, as always.

Aren't they cute!

Emily took a picture of Hannah and me also.

One year check-up

Hannah had her one year well check today and it went oh so well. Hannah weighs 18lbs 3oz (10%) and is 27 3/4in (10%). Her head is 18in (75%)!!! I so hope she's found her growing curve!

Physically she is meeting all her milestones right on. She stacks blocks, waves, claps, bangs 2 objects together, points, takes objects in and out, has mastered the pincer grasp... She is walking, which is not expected by 12 months but not uncommon. The Dr called her an independent walker. I have an independent walker!! Augh!

Verbally she is wonderful. The Dr asked if she said any words yet and I said 5 that we were sure of, plus a number of maybes. (We know she says yay, dog, Mama, uh-oh, and bye-bye.) The Dr watched her and talked to her and we determined that she also says book, hi, nyum, nyum, nyum (which means food or nurse and is considered a word). She may be saying that (dat), Grandpa (Pawpaw), Papi (Papa), Guster (Duh-ter), and Pablo (Pab). Stacia and I think she was also saying Jojo (Stacia's cat) while we were in Beaumont. There is an obvious difference in how she says "Pawpaw" and "Papa" although we have no idea where pawpaw came from since none of us has ever said it. The Dr wants to hear 5 words at 18 months, so Hannah is doing wonderfully in that area!

However, there is always a down side. Hannah had shots today. At 9 months she barely whimpered, but today she SCREAMED. I nursed her for at least 15 minutes after and she still was not happy. We got in the car and Hannah promptly removed her band aids which made things much better.

The third party

Hannah and I went to Beaumont on Friday for a whole number of things. Dad came with us which was nice - so much easier to use a rest room without having to hold Hannah too! On our trip we had lunch with Angela, went to two graduation parties, went to a baby shower, had a birthday dinner party for Hannah, Taryn, and Kennedy, and went to another birthday party. Yeah, we were busy!

While we were there Hannah really started walking. She'd been toddling around for a while from object to object, taking a few steps at a time. By the time we came home she was walking all over the place!

We got to spend quite a bit of time at the boat club. Billy and Shirley, some good family friends who worked there, were retiring. Hannah and I hung out with Dad and Harry and visited with them for several hours. We also saw a lot of other old boat club friends. It isn't the same down there as it was when I was growing up, but it felt a little like the old days with all the familiar people around. And I really enjoyed being there with Hannah as well as some of my childhood friends and their kids. Unfortunately I have no pictures from the boat club, for various reasons.

Hannah, Taryn, and Kennedy's birthday dinner

Sunday at Kennedy's birthday party Hannah played with Londyn who is just a few days younger, and Logan, Londyn's older brother.

Kennedy and I tried to take a picture of us and Hannah, but Hannah wasn't interested. But aren't Ken and I cute?

Monday morning before we went home Hannah had cereal and bananas with Uncle Harry.

Then she picked a pear with Grandpa.

And then we came home. Man I'm tired!

Happy Birthday Hannah!!!

Hannah is not feeling her very best today, which is too bad because it's HER BIRTHDAY! I am so sad and so happy. I miss my sweet little baby, but I am so delighted with this fascinating toddler. And she is truely a toddler, walking more and more every day.

We spent the day at Ikea. Hannah enjoyed having so much space to walk and so many new areas to explore.

There were piles of soccer ball pillows to sit in.

And it is not nice to take a baby out of the soccer ball pillows! However, this photo was taken a about 1pm.

Exactly 12 months after our first family photo. (I think I look a bit nicer in this years!)

There were also piles of teddy bears at Ikea.

And at Ikea you get to ride in the buggy and eat Goldfish! Wow! Goldfish!

Later that evening we planned to go to a Cory Morrow concert in Buda. I was so excited - Hannah's first concert on her first birthday! Unfortunantly it stormed and stormed and stormed. The concert was rained out. Hannah was ok with that. While we waited to see if the rain would pass she had a nice smooth cement floor to walk on, and the kind concert people played recorded music for her to dance to! And there were lots of people telling her how cute she is. Always nice to hear that you are cute!

Hannah made it back to the car dry. I was a bit wet, but Pete wasn't so lucky. He was SOAKED!

Party #2

Hannah has a friend, Campbell, who is just 15 hours older (her birthday is August 15). Naturally the girls needed to have a joint celebration. We met at Zilker Park this morning for silly hats and cupcakes. It was H O T so we didn't stay long, but we had a great time while we were there.

Cupcake is GOOOOD!

Don't look away Hannah!

Icing on the eyebrow, icing on the nose, icing all over - signs of a well enjoyed cupcake!

First birthday party

Be prepared - if you look at all the pictures you are going to be here a while! Hannah had a fabulous first birthday celebration on Saturday. We celebrated at the San Marcos Children's Park and although it was HOT HOT HOT, it was a great location. Hannah had some of her favorite people there - AbuelaKeta, Grandma, Grandpa, aunts, uncles, cousins - it was wonderful. And she made out on the gifts! I want to turn one again!

Hannah waited eagerly to greet her guests

Lunch was good, but those cupcakes were awfully tempting!

Hannah got her first rocking horse - eh - moose

"Hey, I recognize this piano - it's the one I liked at Babies R Us!"

"Hmmm, what's in here?"

"All for me?!?"

"MMMMMM, I think I like this!"

"Yay! This cake stuff is fun!"

"Now look people, I didn't do this to my face. Grandpa smeared the sweet stuff on me!"

"Have I told you how fun this is?!"

"I like this book!"

"Can you hear the music?"

Go, go, go!

The party is over...

After Hannah had a way to short nap in the car on the way to her Grandma's after the party it was still crazy hot. What's better when it's crazy hot than SWIMMING?!

STEPS!

Hannah took her first steps a few hours ago! Pete had just come home from work and was in the living room with Hannah and her friends Emily and Meadow from next door. Hannah took 3 steps toward Meadow who was holding out one of her toy cups. I was in the kitchen and didn't see those first steps :o(

A few minutes later she took 2 steps to Meadow again when Meadow held out a cracker.

So 5 steps, not very much, but just enough to start a whole new world for Pete and me!

8 teeth!

Hannah woke up at 3am this morning and would not go back to sleep for anything. All she wanted was to nurse - and she nursed about 1 1/2 hours before finally dozing off to stay. I was talking to a friend who said her daughter was also up at crazy hours and that she thought it was teething, so I thought, well, Hannah has been drooling quite a bit, and tried to check her mouth.

Now let me tell you, looking in Hannah's mouth is no easy thing. It requires her sitting still and if you've been around Hannah lately you know that doesn't happen much. I finally got a quick peek and sure enough there are 2 more teeth coming in on the bottom! (Hannah ended up napping 2 1/2 hours this morning. I'm usually excited if she gets to 2 hours.)

This afternoon we went to visit Mom at the hospital in New Braunfels. She had her appendix out, and she is doing very well. Hannah wasn't very sure about all the machines and wires around her Grandma, but she did enjoy touching her fingers to Grandma's and eating from the salad bar in the cafeteria. And no one worry, mom checked and Hannah is not over the restricted weight. Mom shouldn't lift her, but she can sit and hold her, if Hannah will sit still long enough!

Uncle Harry is visiting, so Hannah is showing off a lot. He rode home from the hospital with Hannah and me ans she showed off my favorite trick of hers - napping!

Milestones!

Hannah and I had a fun day today. We did something for her Grandma and AbuelaKeta for Mother's Day, but it's a surprise. Can't tell till Sunday!

I have decided (with encouragement from another mommy friend) to call Hannah's first word. She says "Yay!" I'm calling it a word because she consistently uses it correctly. If I say yay she claps and if I clap she says yay. So it's officially a word. Today the dogs were barking and I clapped to get their attention. Hannah immediately started clapping and saying "Yay!"

I think Hannah is about to wave also. She makes the waving motion regularly, but not always for any specific purpose. Just waiting to see what happens.

AND... Hannah took a little step today while holding on to the couch. She had pulled up to the couch and was standing at the end. The ottoman was at the end of the couch sticking out a bit. I put one of her toys on it to try to tempt her. Hannah stopped and examined it for a minute and then reached. It was just a little too far. She did a little foot shuffle to turn toward it and then took one beautiful step to grab the ottoman and then her toy. It was fabulous!

Big, big day!

I have a picture to add later, but I wanted to get down Hannah's big day. Today she had broccoli for the first time, grabbed her spoon for the first time, climbed into Isai's lap (on the floor) for the first time, and just now pulled up onto both feet for the first time!
*******************************************
First taste of broccoli (mixed with sweet potatoes)

I had to be quick so excuse the bad picture. This is how Hannah tells us she's sleepy these days. We leave a pillow on the floor and when she puts her head down on it it's bedtime!

We have 3 teeth!

Well not quite. The top left has a little tooth slit, but the white isn't quite there yet.

AND we have a baby who goes to sleep on her own in her own bed! Woohoo! Last night she slept from 9:30-4 in her pack n play in our room, nursed for 10 minutes at 4 and went right back to sleep in the pack and play until 8!

*******************************************************

This morning we went to the library for story and craft time. Isai made this awesome pocket. Hannah made a dirty diaper...

Later this afternoon Isai's friend Nicholas (who lives next door) came over to play. Hannah played in her swing and the boys played soccer in the yard.

Later mom called. Hannah could here Grandma's voice but couldn't see her!
